Green Cross praises decision of Swiss Parliament to move country away from reliance on nuclear energy
On September 28, 2011 the Swiss Upper House of Parliament voted for government’s decision gradually move country away from its reliance on nuclear energy, take out of service all nuclear power plants and transit to alternative energy sources. Green Cross organization completely supports the Swiss Parliament decision and hopes that other countries will take and develop this race, too.
Ghastly consequences of Chernobyl disaster as well as fresh Fukushima 1 in Japan made people to meditate upon too close threats. Manifestation of many thousands people against use of nuclear power were in Switzerland and Germany. Humanity is becoming aware that it is a high time of transformative change and firm actions. Climate change, air pollution, poor access to safe water, resource scarcities are all global problems that require combined well coordinated efforts to be effectively solved.
Events in Japan and Fukushima 1 disaster have launched an important race in capitals, factories and research facilities across the globe to develop clean energy. Switzerland moved to the fore and led the way for other countries, governments and organizations to follow it.

The day before the Swiss Upper House vote, Mr Gorbachev, founder of Green Cross International, urged Swiss politicians to grasp this historic opportunity to make change. It is a good chance gradually to combine wills and efforts of many countries in fight against global problems that result in wars, conflicts, natural and anthropogenic disasters, social unrest and human suffering.
We support Swiss mood and actions regarding nuclear energy. It is very important to take actions to solve global problems and protect human right to dignified safe life.
